Gardening Basics
Gardening is one of Palia's most rewarding skills — it's a reliable source of gold, cooking ingredients, and villager gifts. You plant seeds on your homeplot, water them daily, and harvest after their growth period ends. Some crops are multi-harvest (they regrow after harvesting) which dramatically improves their gold-per-day value.
Soil Types
Different seeds prefer different soil types. Planting in preferred soil grants a +25% yield bonus (more star-quality crops).
| Soil Type | Best For | How to Get |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Plot | Any crop, no bonus | Default on your plot |
| Flat Soil | Grains, fibers, flowers | Level 3 gardening unlock |
| Bog Soil | Vegetables, fruit, rice | Level 5 gardening unlock |
Star Quality
Star quality crops (★) are worth significantly more gold and are required for certain quests and cooking recipes. You can increase star quality chance by:
- Using preferred soil type for the crop
- Applying fertilizer before planting
- Planting adjacent to the same crop type (adjacency bonus)
- Higher gardening level (passive chance increase)
Best Crops for Gold
The best crops depend on your goals. Here's how to think about it:
| Crop | Grow Days | Regrows? | Gold/Day (base) | Best Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 🍅 Tomato | 4 | Yes (every 2d) | ~87g/day | Gold, cooking |
| 🌻 Rainbow Rose | 7 | Yes (every 5d) | ~90g/day | Gold, gifting Elouisa |
| 🫐 Blueberry | 6 | Yes (every 3d) | ~75g/day | Gold (summer only) |
| 🌼 Heartdrop Lily | 5 | Yes (every 3d) | ~100g/day | Gold, gifting |
| 🌾 Cotton | 5 | Yes (every 3d) | ~48g/day | Crafting materials |
| 🌿 Spice Sprouts | 3 | Yes (every 2d) | ~36g/day | Cooking ingredient supply |
Best early strategy: Fill your entire plot with Tomatoes. They regrow, produce multiple per harvest, and are used constantly in cooking. Switch to Heartdrop Lilies or Rainbow Roses once you reach Level 5 for maximum gold income.

Gardening Tips
- Prioritize regrow crops. Multi-harvest plants like Tomatoes and Heartdrop Lilies give far better gold-per-seed than single-harvest crops.
- Plant in clusters. Adjacent same-crop plants give each other a star quality bonus. Fill entire rows with the same plant.
- Always use fertilizer. Even basic fertilizer meaningfully increases star quality chance, which doubles your effective gold output.
- Water with Focus active. Watering also gives XP — do it while you have a Focus bonus.
- Use the crop planner. Our Crop Planner tool calculates the optimal layout for your plot size.
